My Story

John Robertshaw

  • Childhood - My childhood was spent in West Yorkshire UK and from ages 9-18 I was a boarder at Fulneck School. It was in the early years there that a matron, Edna Jackson, first explained the gospel to me.
  • University and Becoming a Christian - Our family life didn't go well - my parents divorced when I was 16 and my mother was left looking after her 5 children. I stayed with an uncle for a year. Amazingly I was able to remain at Fulneck School and at age 18 went to Christ’s College, Cambridge to study Natural Sciences with Chemistry and Physics as main subjects. In my first week at university I was invited to a sermon organized by the Christian Union. It was there that I became a Christian – I repented of my sins, believed in Jesus as my saviour and decided to follow him for the rest of my life. Just one year later, Jesus baptized me in the Holy Spirit! Later I was baptized in water in a bath in Christ’s College!
  • Summer Missions - At the end of my first year at university, I went on a beach mission in Bridlington and that was the beginning of doing some type of Christian outreach to children every summer until I was 66 years old! I think I missed a couple of years - so it was about 46 missions! In the later years it was the August Holiday Special event in Arbury – my favourite week of the year!
  • Teaching and Research - I did an extra year at Cambridge doing teacher training and then embarked on a career as a Chemistry Teacher during my 20s in Leeds, Giggleswick and Matlock. I met Diane in Matlock and we were married when I was 28. Two years later when Diane was pregnant with Mark, we moved to Cambridge where I spent 6 years doing research in Physical Chemistry - 3 years for a PhD and 3 years post-doc. We had two more boys, Luke and Timothy, during that time.
  • Arbury Community Church - When I was 36, a small fellowship started in our house. This grew and we moved to Arbury School for our Sunday meetings - this was the beginning of what became Arbury Community Church. Eventually we moved our main meetings to the Arbury Community Centre but always also had weekly home meetings. I became the full-time leader after one year and continued until I was 70!
  • Activities - We had many outreach activities in the local community – toddler groups, holiday clubs, youth work, senior citizens groups, home groups, guest events, school assemblies, Christmas events etc. We also developed overseas connections and I went on missions to India about 25 times and Kenya 11 times, often with others. I also managed to squeeze in writing a few books and articles! I enjoy walking in the countryside, swimming, music and computer programming.
  • Main Aim - My aim has always been to tell people the wonderful news of salvation through Jesus Christ and do what I can to fulfil the final command of Jesus:
Matt 28:19-20 “Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.”
